You don’t usually find the words “swanky” and “sports bar” in the same review, but that’s the only appropriate way to describe The Windsor. This Greenwich Village Gastropub—which looks like a man cave Ralph Lauren designed— boasts dark gray pinstripe walls adorned with vintage black and white photos and long wooden tables with bar stools. For the best game view, grab one of the burgundy leather banquettes, outfitted with individual HD flat screens.
While the stylish décor can’t be beat, the equally, if not bigger draw at this surprisingly relaxed spot is the gourmet menu featuring top notch American and British comfort food and drinks. You can order typical snacks with a twist, including spinach and artichoke dip ($9), chicken wings with stilton dressing and fresh blue cheese ($9), and even mac and cheese with black diamond cheddar and brioche crumbs ($12). If you’ve really worked up an appetite, there’s chicken pot pie ($9) made with chicken confit in a potato leek sauce. Of course, the bar also serves up a signature burger ($14) or an organic turkey burger ($15) with truffle aioli if you prefer.
It’s no secret that the key to any stellar sports bar is great drinks, and The Windsor offers plenty of drafts, bottled beers, shots, and a comprehensive wine list. We loved the signature drinks, unique spins on both British and American classics. Our favs included the Half Windsor ($12) with Plymouth gin, fresh cucumber juice, and lime, the Sloney Poney ($12) made with huckleberry infused 44 North Vodka, peach liquor, freshly pressed apple juice and lime juice and the Porn Star Martini ($14) with Uluvka infused with vanilla pods, with passion fruit and lime and served with a chilled shot of champagne. With this selection of food and drinks, even football un-enthusiasts will have a reason to get in the sports bar spirit!—CHASE ROSEN
