If you thought Duane Reade and Rite Aid were your only choices in terms of Big Apple pharmacies, head straight to Greenwich Village’s C.O. Bigelow—if only to realize what you’ve been missing. The old world apothecary has been NYC’s most famed drug store and beauty destination since opening its doors in 1838 (fun fact: Mark Twain and Eleanor Roosevelt used to go!) and we can see why it still attracts A-List fans including the likes of Cameron Diaz, SJP, and Kelly Ripa.
Upon entering the vintage looking spot, you’ll notice a center glass counter filled with hair accessories, makeup, and some cute costume jewelry. Rows and rows of packed display cases line the surrounding area, with gothic-style chandeliers hanging overhead. We spotted everything you could possibly need for your grooming routine, from imported Italian Marvis toothpaste in flavors like liquorish and jasmine mint ($10.50), to Butter nail polish (a non-toxic product from London made without formaldehyde, toluene, DBP or parabens), to mineral makeup by Jane Iredale.
Men can also stock up on grooming essentials including pre-shaves, aftershaves, shave creams, and razors, to name a few. What about mom’s to be? We spotted great finds for expectant women including three different types of stretch mark creams (starting at $35), Hyland’s all natural Teething Gel ($7.39), and an all-natural Diaper Cream by Weleda Calendula ($12). For the home, you can find tons of scented candles, Tocca Soaps, and cleaning products. Of course, you can also pick up the store brand C.O Bigelow products (also available at Bath and Body Works). Our fav is the C.O Bigelow Mentha Lip Shine ($7.50) which freshens breath while hydrating your pout! Who knew filling a prescription could be so much fun?—AMANDA LIBBYC.O.
