Bake a Perfect Cupcake at Butter Lane!At Butter Lane's "Cupcakes 101" Cooking Class, You Can Learn To Bake Like a Pro
Baking is fun, but the leftover mess? Not so much. Especially when cocktails are involved. Well, thanks to Butter Lane Cupcake’s baking classes you can have your cake and drink bubbly too… sans the dreaded cleanup.
The quaint little bakery—with locations in Manhattan and Park Slope—offers “Butter Lane Cupcakes 101,” where baking/dessert enthusiasts can learn to whip up the perfect treat. You can either join a group of 12 chefs-in-training for $60, or bring your own party (up to 15 people) for a total of $500 (which comes out to about $34 a person).
To further sweeten the deal, you can BYOB. Needless to say, when I came across this fab find, I decided to round up some friends for an impromptu cupcake and cocktail soiree.
We headed to the instructional kitchen, attached to the Alphabet City bakery. Inside, there were stations stocked with ingredients (and aprons, of course!) and a long picnic-style table. After a friendly instructor split our party of 15 into three groups, we learned how to create three of Butter Lane’s famed cupcakes (vanilla, chocolate and banana) and icings (American Chocolate, Vanilla Bean and Cream Cheese). And while I’m no Top Chef, I can now scrape vanilla beans, chop up fresh raspberries, and work a mixer like a pro. But I digress…
After prepping, measuring, and mixing ingredients, we learned how to ice (and create the perfect swirl) during a power-icing lesson. When the two-hour class ended, we were gifted with a take home a box of our cupcake creations, and extra frosting. All in all, whether you’re simply looking to brush up your culinary skills, or need a fun party idea (think birthdays and bridal showers), we’d say this is the perfect excursion.—MARISA KAMERMAN
