Can you believe it took this long for NYC to get a specialty shop focused purely on pudding? I mean, we have spots dedicated entirely to PB and J, macaroons, mac and cheese, and even rice pudding, but plain old pudding? No dice. Until Friday, that is, when Clio opened up Puddin’ on St. Mark’s Place. But make no mistake; Clio’s treats are light years ahead of the JELL-O desserts that may come to mind. In fact, the East Village shop uses all-natural, organic ingredients, including chocolate sourced from an Icelandic confectioner, vanilla made from Madagascar beans, and vegan options (we loved the creamy coconut bowl).
The menu boasts eight classic pudding flavors starting at $5.50, as well as 18—yes, 18—different toppings which are all made in house. (Think marshmallow crème, red velvet cake, dried cherry compote, and old fashioned peanut brittle, to name a few.) The parfaits are equally inventive, especially the Lemon Drop ($6.50) made with lemon pudding, crushed ginger crunch cookies, and toasted marshmallow cream. You can also sample some pudding-based cakes and pies ($5 for a slice) and round out your meal with Stumptown coffee, lattes, or tea. We have a feeling this place is here to stay, the proof is in the pudding. (Sorry, I had to.)—AMANDA LIBBY
