Spring has sprung, which means there’s no better time to enjoy some farm fresh food. And now that Foragers City Grocer has a new, larger outpost in Chelsea—the spot’s first location opened in DUMBO 6 years ago—we can’t think of a better place to stock up.
The recently opened digs (which officially welcomed shoppers in March), offer all of the organic, local produce and ridiculously fresh ingredients you could ever want. (And by ridiculously fresh, we mean eggs don’t stay on the shelves for more than three days and are delivered within 24 hours of being laid.) Other goodies include fruits and veggies from Foragers’ own farm, artisan pastas, bulk spices, canned goods, and locally made treats (including fruit-flavored hard candy made in Brooklyn).
For carnivores, there’s an on-site butcher dishing out everything from house-made fennel sausage, to duck confit and cider-brined pork chops. You’ll also find a sustainable fish counter with seafood caught in accordance to Monterey Bay Aquarium guidelines.
As for our favorite feature: the spot also doubles as Foragers City Table, a market-to-table restaurant currently open for dinner (they plan to offer lunch soon). The restaurant-within-a-market—which officially opened last week—offers a seasonal Asian-inspired menu with options including “The Butcher’s Steak” ($20) marinated in soy and crown maple syrup, Tea-smoked Black Cod ($22), and Organic Fried Black Pepper Tofu ($16), to name a few.
If you can’t stay for dinner, you can grab breakfast or lunch on the go. Our favorites include the omelet breakfast sandwich with Forager’s bacon & cheese ($7), butcher sandwiches (starting at $9), seasonal salads, and rotisserie chicken with organic rice and cucumbers ($10). Let’s just say this spot makes it easy eating green.—CHASE ROSEN
