Finally, uptown-ers can get great, authentic tacos in their own back yard. The UES’s Cascabel Taqueria dishes out 8 varieties stuffed with everything from crispy yellow fin tuna with hearts of palm, to hanger steak with crispy onions and oyster mushrooms. For vegetarians, there is a meatless option with mushrooms, fingerling potatoes and bibb lettuce. If you can’t decide on just one, the dishes are perfect for sharing: 2 tacos cost $8.50 and are served on rectangular, tin trays. You can round out your meal with house salsas and guacs, which are made to order (mild, medium, or hot). Of course, there are small salads to start with, as well as larger plates for dinner including pollo asado (chicken with chili and creamed corn) and carne a la plancha (grilled steak with salsa and re-fried beans).
The bar scene is worth a visit alone, you can enjoy pitchers of sangria, organic tequilas, microbrews, and 6 dollar wines. We also loved the unique margaritas; we tried one made with hibiscus and pomegranate, served in a mason jar. The daily selections are listed on colorful chalkboards scattered inside and al fresco. Cascabel prides itself on being a “counter casual” spot, meaning you can sit at the bar and sample the Mexican market inspired cuisine while watching a game on a big flat screen, or grab a table adorned with bright green chairs. The outdoor seating is always packed, but there are plenty of places to congregate, whether you choose the eatery’s center, communal table, or grab a bar stool at the counter facing 2nd Avenue. We love you, La Esquina, but there may be a new sheriff in town… or uptown, at least.—AMANDA LIBBYCascabel Taqueria| 1538 2nd Ave| 212-717-8226|nyctacos.com
