Not Your Typical Taqueria: Salvation Taco Heats Up Murray HillAn inside look at Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield’s Taqueria
While gourmet tacos are nothing new here in NYC, there’s always room for more. So naturally, when we heard April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman (the famed restaurateurs behind The Spotted Pig, The Breslin and The John Dory Oyster Bar) were opening a taqueria at the Pod Hotel, we had to stop by. And we’re happy to report Salvation Taco stays true to the duo’s successful formula: it’s a fun bar with great food.
The hotspot enlisted Fonda chef Roberto Santibañez to create a mouthwatering menu featuring everything from roasted cauliflower tacos with curried cream ($3), to skirt steak tacos with pecan and chipotle ($3), and even Moroccan lamb on naan ($5). Round out your meal with some chips and guac ($9), salads ($9 and up), or more adventurous options including Bloomfield’s crispy pig ears ($7) and chicken feet ($4).
Wash it all down with cocktails created by Hotel Delmano’s Sam Anderson, who created a signature drink menu that does not dissapoint. Some of our favorites included the The Traveler, made with vodka, pineapple, sangrita verde, and lime juice ($10); the Fly by Night with gin, lemon juice, cinnamon-vanilla beans and orange blossom ($12); and the 5 Island Horchata with rum, coconut horchata, and cold-brewed coffee ($13).
You can sample the south-of-the-border spinoffs surrounded by neon barstools, cute tables topped with quirky fruit motifs, and a colorful green ceiling. Travel further back and you’ll find a trendy rec room equipped with a fireplace and two ping pong tables, if you want to get your game on.—LAUREN MILLER
