No gluten? No problem! Enter Pip’s Place, a stylishly elegant “Gluten Free Cakery” now open on the Upper East Side.
The dessert destination was founded by Denise Cumming, a former stay-at-home mom looking for a sweet solution to deal with her daughter Olivia’s Celiac disease back in 2007. So, the self-trained baker got cooking and began trading wheat for ingredients including rice and almond flour, cornstarch, and rice bran.
The result? A full menu of gluten free meals and baked goods now available at Pip’s Place (Pip is short for Olivia’s nickname “Pippi”). The chic bakery—it’s outfitted with pretty pops of hot pink, fresh flowers, and gourmet goodies neatly displayed atop a sleek white stone countertop—offers over 40 gluten and peanut free cookies, cakes, and muffins baked on-site daily in an immaculate open kitchen.
Stop by for coffee and a muffin ($3) in the morning, or curb afternoon sugar cravings with decadent fudge brownies ($2), heath bar squares ($3), raspberry pinwheels ($1.25), or banana layer cake ($4), to name a few. And if you need a last minute fix, delivery is available.—AMANDA LIBBY
