WHAT: Fast-Casual Comfort Food
WHERE: Schnipper’s Quality Kitchen
PRICES: range from $5.99 to $9.99
Schnipper’s Quality Kitchen first came to Manhattan’s New York Times Building in 2009, offering quality comfort food in a fast-casual environment. Now the owners and brothers, Andy and Jonathan Schnipper, who also founded Hale and Hearty Soups, expanded with a second location adjacent to Madison Square Park.
Since the shop’s opening a few weeks ago, the packed eatery seems to be bringing stiff competition to Shake Shack, located directly across the street. The spot is inspired by American comfort food; in fact, the Schnipper’s traveled across the country sampling the best burgers, dogs, and tacos to perfect their eponymous concept.
The menu offers a variety of American staples including six different types of burgers (including turkey and veggie burgers on whole wheat buns), all natural black Angus hot dogs starting at $3.99, sweet potato and regular fries (starting at $2.99) and mac and cheese for $4.50. As for lighter options, you can choose from a large selection of salads including an Asian chop chop ($8.99), Greek salad (8.99), and classic cob ($8.99) to name a few. Sloppy joes are the house specialty and a nod to the Schnipper’s childhood. “The inspiration for this dish is simple: our Mother. She made it constantly growing up and it became a part of us. This recipe is my version,” Jonathan Schnipper told us. Try the classic, cheese, or mac and joe, just don’t forget to wash it down with a handcrafted milk shake.
The comfort food staples are served in a sleek space that boasts natural wood tables and stainless steel chairs. Orders are taken at the front counter, with a large, bright red and yellow menu overhead. Stop by and tell us what you think!—AMANDA LIBBY
