Sweetgreen Raises The Salad BarSweetgreen at the Nomad raises the bar for quick and healthy lunch options
Midtown Manhattan may be known as the “food wasteland” of New York City when it comes to weekday lunch options, but the Flatiron’s new import from Washington D.C. seeks to fill this void with a salad bar that’s a step above the rest. Sweetgreen, a salad chain founded in 2007 by three college students that has since expanded to 20 locations, sets itself apart from the typical assembly-line salad joints with a focus on locally grown and organic produce and a rotating menu of seasonal ingredients, in addition to a selection of cold-pressed organic juices and fat-free all-natural tart frozen yogurt.
If you want to customize your own salad ($7.35 base price), you get to choose two types of bases from five options of greens (including spinach and kale) and wild grains (a quinoa-farro mix), four toppings, and an assortment of cheeses and proteins ($1-$3.50 extra). And if the time it takes to decide on toppings doesn’t fit into your narrow lunch break timeslot, Sweetgreen has plenty of pre-made salads on the menu ($7.95-$11.85), including the popular Misoba (organic mesclun with soba noodles, avocado, raw corn, carrots, raw seeds and cilantro; topped with a miso sesame ginger vinaigrette and a squeeze of sriracha) and best-selling Guacamole Greens (organic mesclun with roasted chicken, avocado, grape tomatoes, red onion and crushed tortilla chips; topped with a lime cilantro jalapeno vinaigrette and a fresh lime squeeze).
But Sweetgreen isn’t just a pit stop for lunch. The company seeks to be more of a lifestyle brand, hosting an annual music festival attended by over 20,000 people this summer and visiting inner city students in the Capitol for lessons on healthy eating and sustainable foods.
Tip: Download the Sweetgreen Rewards app to pay for your salads through your phone and every 11th one is free—a pretty sweet deal, and your best bet for a quick and delicious lunch fix. —CASSIE KREITNER
