Top Chef’s Hung Huynh Takes Orders at The GeneralEMM Group’s Newest Restaurant Serves Modern Asian Cuisine With a Twist on the Bowery
Fresh off of his seafood success at Catch, Top Chef winner Hung Huynh has headed east, serving modern Asian cuisine at The General, the EMM Group’s newest restaurant. The sprawling 300-seat space—divided into a pastry bar, casual cafe, upscale dining room, and in the warmer months, an outdoor patio—is the latest addition to the nightlife and restaurant team’s bourgeoning empire on the Bowery, joining newly-opened nightclub hot spots Finale and Bow at the same address.
The menu features Chinese and Japanese-inspired dishes with exotic and inventive twists, including a variety of sushi rolls, Chinese Chicken Tacos ($13), Tuna Tataki BLT with bacon, tomato, and guacamole ($14), and a delicious Cinderella Risotto made with mushrooms, acorn squash and truffle xo sauce ($19). Dishes are designed for sharing, and sleek dish stands on each table provide easy access. Groups can also enjoy a sumptuous selection of “large format” plates—including an amazing Peking Duck dish with moo shu pancakes ($69)—which can easily serve four.
Finish your meal with some green tea donuts ($11), or perhaps a selection from “The General’s Freezer” (think assorted ice pops and ice cream sandwiches), and then head next door to Finale or underground to Bow for live music and all that jazz. —CASSIE KREITNER
