Viktor and Spoils, the Hotel on Rivington’s newest hotspot (formerly the CV lounge) is easy to miss. The chic, yet unassuming bar and eatery is tucked behind a bright orange, unlabeled door that looks kind of like a service entrance. But once you get your bearings, you probably won’t want to leave.
The recently opened spot looks more like a lounge and less like a taqueria, with dim lighting complimented by fun pops of neon (including a wall panel lined with brightly colored Mexican soda bottles), burgundy banquettes surrounding low tables, and a large center bar with chic wooden panels. (The bathroom is also worth a visit, it’s completely lined with Pesos!) The cool atmosphere is enhanced by upbeat music and a countless selection of mezcal and tequila. There are also plenty of classic cocktails for $14, including margaritas (we loved the watermelon variety with Don Julio Bianco, fresh watermelon, lime, Grand Mariner, and agave nectar), and a fabulous tequila sunrise with avion, pomegranate, organge, and passion fruit. One of the best deals on the menu is the tequila and mezcal flights, which include 3 shots for $14. (Talk about the perfect recipe for a fun night out.)
As for the food, Executive Chef John Keller dishes out some great tacos (two per order) and taquitos (three per order) which you can enjoy bar side or at one of the lounge tables. We loved the Mahi Mahi taco ($15) with avocado salsa, red cabbage, and chili puree as well as the Beer Braised Short Rib taco for $16. You can also enjoy traditional nachos with signature toppings including roasted cactus, lobster, housemade chorizo, and poblano and corn.
Between the fun atmosphere, killer drinks, and gourmet cuisine, we’re thankful for the spot’s elusive entrance. We kind of want to keep this place all to ourselves, although that’s definitely wishful thinking.—AMANDA LIBBY
