Why Settle for a Hot Dog when You Can Build Your Own “Haute” Dog This Labor Day Weekend?

AsiaDog Dishes Out Designer "Haute" Dogs with Gourmet Ingredients

WHAT: The Perfect Haute Dog
WHERE: AsiaDog
PRICES: start at $4.50 for one hot dog, 2 for $8

The lauded AsiaDog became an instant hit at the Brooklyn Flea a few years back, and when the brick and mortar shop finally opened up on Kenmare Street we weren’t surprised it brought a similar cult following. Owners Mel and Steve created a simple concept that became an instant hit by giving one of NYC’s favorite street foods a gourmet update. Whether you’re looking for inspiration to spruce up your Labor Day menu, or just crave a twist on the classic treat, we highly recommend a trip to the NoLita eatery.

The small, cozy spot is adorned with exposed brick walls, natural wood counters, and a few chairs and tables lining one side of the cheerful digs. A bright, white and red menu hangs overhead offering tons of options to build your designer dog. First, pick your meat: beef, organic beef, chicken, or veggie. The toppings are the real stars of the dish, you can select options ranging from Asian slaw with sesame seeds and scallions to house made kimchi and nori flakes to Thai mango relish made with cucumber red onion and cilantro) and crushed peanuts. Meat-lovers will love the “Wangding” with Chinese BBQ pork belly, cucumber and scallions, while those craving more traditional varieties can enjoy the “Mash” with sweet and spicy ketchup, jalapeño mustard, and crushed potato chips. Why didn’t we think of that?! You can also build your own corn dog, just select the meat and they’ll fry it up in a special batter served with Korean chili and dipping sauce.

As for sides, we loved the crispy yam fries ($3) and wasabi potato salad ($3). You can also get a mixed green salad with sesame tangerine dressing ($3). Wash everything down with fresh-squeezed limeade soda, or iced barley tea. If you don’t have time to stop by this weekend, you can always spice up your BBQ menu by adding some of the gourmet options above to your grill. Happy Labor Day!—AMANDA LIBBY
